What is canine epilepsy?

There are several different types of seizures that can occur in dogs. Idiopathic epilepsy is the most common type. Seizures can result in damage to the brain which is why treatment is so important. There are usually symptoms associated with dog seizures. Your dog will usually act scared, dazed, or worried if they can sense a seizure coming.

When the seizure is actually happening, your dog may become stiff or fall over to one side. A dog may also experience drooling, eye fluttering, muscle twitching, or lose bladder and bowel control. Dogs may also paddle all four limbs while lying on their back. A seizure that lasts for more than five minutes is more likely to result in organ damage or a coma.

If your dog is having a partial seizure, it will only affect one particular area. Dogs may also exhibit strange behavior for several hours after the seizure, although some dogs may act completely normal. It is important to speak to a veterinarian if you suspect your dog is having a seizure.

What causes dog seizures?

There are several causes of canine epilepsy. However, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause in each particular dog. Some of the causes include anemia, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, blood sugar levels, brain cancer, or head injury.

Idiopathic epilepsy is a genetic type of epilepsy that is prevalent in certain breeds. Border Collies, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, and German Shepherds are all more likely to develop idiopathic epilepsy.

What is CBD for seizures in dogs?

CBD oil is extracted from the marijuana plant. CBD works by interacting with the dog’s endocannabinoid system. Most CBD products have very little THC in them, if any at all, so you do not have to worry about your dog getting high. Side effects from CBD are extremely rare. CBD for seizures in dogs is typically administered orally. Although many pet owners state that their dog’s seizures lessened after using CBD products, it is always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian.
