Cancer in Cats

Cancer is the leading cause of death in cats over the age of 10. Everyone knows that the quicker you find and diagnose cancer, the better chance you have at fighting if off and prolonging your cat's life. Cats are susceptible to the same types of cancers as humans, but they can metastasize at a much faster rate. If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, schedule an appointment with your vet.

General Signs of Feline Cancer

1. Unusual Odor

If you notice unusually foul odors coming from the cat's mouth, nose or rectal area, it may be due to a tumor.

2. Lumps or Bumps

Checking your cat's skin monthly is a good habit to have. Don’t forget to check behind ears and around the face. Even if you find a very tiny lump or bump, cancer can grow very quickly. Do not ignore any new lumps or bumps. If the bumps are bleeding or there is discharge, see a veterinarian immediately.

3. Wounds and Swellings

A wound that doesn't heal, any kind of swelling, enlarged lymph nodes, a lameness or swelling in the bone, abnormal bleeding are all classic signs of cancer. But sometimes there are little or no signs, at least early on. So anytime the cat isn’t feeling well, or there’s something abnormal or not quite right, you need to bring it to the attention of the veterinarian.

What Can I Do to Help Prevent My Cat from Getting Cancer?

The prevention of feline cancer mainly depends on the cat's diet and lifestyle, as well as an ability to detect early signs and symptoms of cancer prior to advancement to a further stage. If cancer is detected at an earlier stage, it has a higher chance of being treated, therefore lessening the chances of fatality. Overall, prevention is difficult because we don’t know the causes of most cancers. Rather than trying to prevent cancer, identifying it early and treating it quickly is the better strategy. Taking domesticated cats for regular checkups to the veterinarian can help spot signs and symptoms of cancer early on and help maintain a healthy lifestyle. Further, due to advancements in research, prevention of certain types of feline illnesses remains possible.
