Joint Problems
in Cats

Arthritis is a joint problem that can reduce mobility and elicit pain in cats. It can be caused by injury, infection, the cat’s own immune system, or developmental problems involving the joints. However, the most common form of arthritis in cats is called osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease.

Keeping a cat in good shape through proper diet can help relieve the symptoms. Medications and supplements can help, as can massage, acupuncture, and even surgery.

What causes osteoarthritis or
joint problems in cats?

thinning of joint cartilage

Osteoarthritis involves the thinning of joint cartilage (a protective cushioning between bones), the buildup of fluid within the joint, and, ultimately, the formation of bony growths within the joint. Over time, the roughness created by these bony growths can lead to reduced joint mobility and pain.

Certain breeds have an increased risk due to various underlying joint problems.
Hip dysplasia is seen especially in Maine Coon cats (but also Persians, Siamese and other breeds). Patella luxation (dislocation of the knee cap) has been reported more commonly in Abyssinian and Devon Rex cats. Scottish Folds are particularly prone to severe arthritis affecting multiple joints due to an abnormality of cartilage that occurs in the breed.

What are the common treatments for
osteoarthritis or joint problems?

Medications can be very effective at controlling the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, but should only be used under direct supervision by your vet, as any drugs can have side-effects.

Obesity or being overweight should be avoided. Careful weight management is therefore very important for older cats. If your cat is overweight, they will benefit from carefully controlled weight loss, supervised by your vet. Your vet may also recommend a special diet to help achieve this safely and effectively.

Product Description

Joint and Muscle Formula is a 100% natural formula utilizing a premium blend of herbs and nutraceuticals to promote healthy joints, muscles and bones in pets of all ages.  Ingredients like Spirulina and Glucosamine serve to nourish and rehabilitate joints and cartilage, while herbs like Devil’s Claw, Ginger, Frankincense and Yucca root help to reduce inflammation, pain and swelling.  This gentle, safe and effective combination works with the body to improve mobility, range of motion and overall joint health long-term.

The ingredients in Joint and Muscle Formula provide daily, ongoing support of healthy joints, muscles and bones.  Pets suffering from conditions such as arthritis can benefit from daily use of Joint and Muscle Formula, and healthy animals can also benefit from daily use for maintenance and preventative purposes.  The ingredients in Joint and Muscle Treatment are largely well tolerated without side effects, even with long-term use.  Many have mixed daily doses of Joint and Muscle Formula with a high protein, low carbohydrate wet food diet to further reduce inflammation in the body and enhance results.

Most pets begin life enjoying flexibility, ease of movement and agility during exercise and play.  Regular exercise is one of the best ways to ensure joints stay pain-free and healthy long-term. But even with frequent activity, the stresses of daily life can eventually put a strain on the joints.  Cartilage, which protects and buffers the joints against impact, can wear down and result in pain, swelling and reduced mobility over time.  Older animals may have difficulty sitting down, standing up, running or jumping onto the couch.  Such signs of joint pain and inflammation grow increasingly common with age, but fortunately there are natural options to help reduce and even prevent these symptoms.

Joint and Muscle Formula contains a proprietary blend of the following ingredients in a therapeutic dosage:

Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) provides long-term support and relief in cases of joint inflammation and immobility.  Devil’s Claw also has been used successfully to relieve back pain, knee pain and hip pain.

Frankincense (Boswelia serrata) is used to relieve pain, inflammation and discomfort in the joints.  Boswelia serrata is native to India and is typically used in cases of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis to ease pain.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) helps to reduce stiffness, swelling, inflammation and pain in the joints.  Human studies on the therapeutic use of Ginger have shown reduction in knee pain and stiffness when compared to a placebo.  This antioxidant herb is consumed as a food in Asia and also helps to promote healthy digestion.

Glucosamine (Glucosamine Hydrochloride) is used widely across the globe to relieve and prevent symptoms of joint pain and immobility.  Glucosamine is thought to help slow the degeneration of cartilage, while lubricating the joints to help pets suffering from poor mobility and stiffness in the hips and legs.  Results of regular use include improved range of motion, reduced pain and greater mobility.

Spirulina (Organic Blue-Green Algae) is a very nutritious antioxidant food, containing vitamins, minerals and pigments that benefit the joints.  Phycocyanin, one of the pigments found in Spirulina, is thought to possess anti-inflammatory properties that make it an effective and safe pain reliever.  Spirulina is also thought to provide alkalizing properties, which can be helpful in reducing acidity that may contribute to joint inflammation.

Yucca Root (Yucca aloifolia) is native to the Mexico and the American Southwest.  Yucca was used in Native American herbalism to relieve pain, inflammation and stiffness in the joints.  Yucca is considered to provide gentle and safe anti-inflammatory support.

Inactive ingredients are Purified Water, USP Cane Ethanol Alcohol 20%, USP Vegetable Glycerin.

  1. :

It definitely works. My dog is bouncing around like never before. Well, not-as-old dog anymore. Lol Before, he would do his business outside and then just stand and not move. His bones are so old, that it would take him several seconds to sit or lay down. Now, he goes outside with excitement. I can see he wants to be out there and walk and explore. He loves to play with other dogs again! He doesn’t spring up like a puppy, but it is nowhere near as difficult as it used to be. I am anxious to see what a little more time with this product will do for him. 🙂

We adopted Moxie and after a lifetime of racing, this stuff helps to ease the joint pain and inflammation that comes from years of running around. Great formula from a great company.

  3. :

High quality product. Very effective, will buy again.

  4. :

Hip dysplasia, arthritis, pain, limping… you name it, our Collie has it. Poor little guy had a terrible time just getting up and down the stairs. We started mixing this in with his food every day and saw slow but sure improvements in his mobility. He doesn’t seem to be in as much pain and for that we’re grateful.

  5. :

I use this with my Golden Retriever. It seems to work much better than the previous glucosamine that I used before.
